Creamline’s Jia Morado de Guzman: ‘It’s different to have Alyssa Valdez on the court’

Star setter Julia Morado-de Guzman believes that with Alyssa Valdez on the court, the Creamline Cool Smashers become a different team altogether.

In her media remarks after securing their PVL Invitational finals berth with a victory over Kinh Bac-Bac Ninh on Tuesday night, Morado-de Guzman emphasized that Valdez’s presence brings the much-needed veteran experience the Cool Smashers require during playoff situations.

“Last conference, she was still on the sidelines guiding us, helping us out, cheering us on, pero it’s different pa rin having her inside and contributing points, especially kapag dikitan and crucial ‘yung situation,” said Morado-de Guzman.

Valdez was absent throughout the PVL All-Filipino Conference earlier this year due to a knee injury she sustained in December. However, she made her comeback for the Cool Smashers during the beginning of the mid-season conference earlier this month.

“Nadagdagan ‘yung maaasahan ko sa loob ng court with the return of (Valdez) kasi lahat ng spikers ko kaya kong asahan (to score),” added Morado-de Guzman.

Valdez and Morado-de Guzman have been teammates since their days with the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in the UAAP, and they have continued their partnership in numerous call-ups to represent the country in international competitions.

In a remarkable display, Morado-de Guzman, a former PVL Finals MVP, masterfully delivered 17 excellent sets and also contributed three points, leading the Cool Smashers to a commanding 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 victory over the Vietnamese-based team.
