In short, the Golden State Warriors‘ legacy is hanging on a loose thread. Everyone in the hoops community knows that it’s not a great time to be a Dubs fan. Especially after the exit of Klay Thompson, the franchise’s future fell on its aging superstar’s shoulders. Right when the Dub Nation eased off on Klay’s departure, Stephen Curry dropped a time bomb on his Warriors’ future with an unexpected confession. And as a chain of events, the Dubs owner, Joe Lacob, reacted to the statement with a $62 million update.
Ahead of Team USA’s Paris Olympics dream, Steph sat with Marc J. Spears for an interview. Spears asked the most obvious question that everyone would now ask the Baby-faced Assassin. ‘Will he retire a Warriors player?’ Promisingly, he agreed to stay a Warrior, saying, “I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life.” However, following that, he addressed GSW’s diminished chance of winning a Championship.
“Let’s put it this way, it’s a long-winded way of saying that if it is a situation where you’re a bottom feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I’d have a hard time with that. But I don’t think that’s going to be the reality.” This comment, for obvious reasons, raised an alarming situation in the Bay Area. With their 4x Championship-winning leader making a statement like this, it could even have ramifications on the futures of Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga- two stars the franchise wants to build a future around!
And, Jason Dumas, a senior reporter covering the Dubs, looking into the affairs, said, “I’m not saying they owe Steph Curry, they don’t owe him. Obviously, they’ve been successful & he’s the main reason. But I just think if you wanna win as an organization, it would behoove you to maximize the time you have Steph Curry on the roster.”
He went to the extent of saying, “What was this roster what was this organization before Steph Curry came around it was a joke.” Dumas, speaking on San Francisco’s popular radio show, 95.7 The Game, turned everyone’s attention towards Joe Lacob. While Stephen Curry has dropped a concerning confession, Lacob went on to indirectly intervene to keep the Dub Nation in check.
Joe Lacob hints at lowering GSW’s bargaining power exclusively for their biggest star, Stephen Curry
While the superstar hasn’t spoken a word about the extension this summer, Joe Lacob decided to drop an update after the shocking confession. Speaking to The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami, Lacob said, “We have not discussed it. He’s busy right now and he should stay busy and focused on that with the Olympics but if he wants to talk about that, that’s up to him. He’s not said that at all, but if he wants to, we’ll certainly entertain that discussion.”
Above all, Lacob revealed his expectations from the superstar as well. He further continued, saying, ” Let’s put it this way, Steph Curry, I fully anticipate he’ll be a Warrior for life. I thought Klay was going to be, too, but I was wrong.”
Nevertheless, the owner of the most successful team in the past decade seemed to be confident about his superstar, even after the entire Klay Thompson fiasco. Do you think Steph will stay a Dubs superstar? Let us know in the comments.
