Meralco Bolts Edge Out Magnolia Hotshots in PBA Philippine Cup Opener

Manila, Philippines – The 2023-2024 PBA Philippine Cup kicked off with a bang as the Meralco Bolts narrowly defeated the Magnolia Hotshots, 92-89. The game marked the highly anticipated debut of Magnolia’s new import, Glenn Robinson III, and the introduction of Meralco’s rookie, CJ Cancino.

Robinson started strong, showcasing his scoring prowess early on. However, the Meralco Bolts, led by veterans Allen Durham and Chris Newsome, managed to keep pace. The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams trading baskets.

The turning point came in the third quarter when Allen Durham took over for Meralco. His dominant performance helped the Bolts extend their lead to double digits heading into the final frame. Magnolia mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as Meralco held on for the victory.

A highlight of the game was Chris Banchero’s historic four-point play, a first in PBA history. While Robinson made a promising debut, the Meralco Bolts proved to be the more resilient team on the night.

The PBA season is off to an exciting start, and fans can expect more thrilling matchups as the competition heats up.
