Calm, cool, and collected.

The Creamline Cool Smashers weathered a late Chery Tiggo rally late in the fourth set en route to a 25-20, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-19 win to end the Crossovers’ unbeaten start in the PVL Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Tuesday, July 20.

Bernadeth Pons was firing in all cylinders, dropping a new career-best of 25 points and 23 excellent receptions and to continue relishing in her new role as one of Creamline’s starting spikers in the absence of key players Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos and Jema Galanza.

Import Erica Staunton added a 21-point outing, while Michele Gumabao chipped in 17 markers for the ladies in pink, who now are now tied in the second spot with the Crossovers in the second spot in Pool A behind identical 2-1 win-loss records.

“Personally, I was disappointed with my performance last time,” Pons revealed, referring to her nine-point output in their four-set win over the Farm Fresh Foxies last July 20. “I knew I could do better, I could do more.”

She did more than that.

Erica Staunton added 21 points, including two crucial back-to-back hits that put Creamline ahead 20-16 in the fourth set. After Kath Bell scored her 30th point, Pons responded with consecutive power hits.

Following another Bell attack and a Pons error, Risa Sato connected on her signature hit to put the Cool Smashers at match point with a two-handed dump off a Chery Tiggo over-receive.

Pons then fittingly closed out the match with another powerful hit, as Creamline’s defense thwarted Bell’s final attempt to extend the match.

The Cool Smashers earlier asserted its dominance early in the fourth set and held an 11-3 cushion capped by Bea De Leon’s block.

In the third set, Creamline shifted to higher gears and unleashed a 8-0 run that turned a 6-8 deficit into a 14-8 lead with Pons and Kyle Negrito taking turns in punishing Chery Tiggo’s defense with ease.

Next for the four-time PVL All-Filipino champs are the Galeries High Towers while the Chery Tiggo aims to bounce back with the pool-leading PLDT standing in their way on Saturday, August 3.
