Yesterday, an Australian woman was gang-raped in Paris. Authorities have not released the victim’s name, but she is believed to be a member of the Australian delegation competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Witnesses said they were dining at a local restaurant on Boulevard de Clichy when a woman “lost control” and asked for help. “Her clothes were disheveled, her hair was disheveled and she was in a state of shock,” one told Le Parisien.

Police and paramedics were immediately on the scene. The 25-year-old woman then contacted the Australian sports delegation.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has admitted that it was likely a “gang rape”. It took place between Saturday and Sunday and officials are investigating.

Strath Gordon, the Australian team’s communications director, said Australian athletes in Paris were aware of the attack and were working to protect their athletes.

“They have been advised not to wear the team uniform in public,” Gordon said. “This is a surprise as we have not received any threats since landing in Paris. At this point, we are just focused on preparing for the Games.”

The news has sent shockwaves through the Paris 2024 Olympics, which will begin tonight (July 24). The Washington Post wrote: “Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, has promised that the French capital will be “the safest place in the world” when the Olympics open. But there have been concerns about security in France, where officials are struggling to maintain a balance.”
