Creamline denies Petro Gazz’s three-peat bid, forges semis duel with Cignal

MANILA (UPDATED) – There’s no denying Creamline their semifinal spot in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.

The Cool Smashers, sans star players Tots Carlos, Jema Galanza, and Alyssa Valdez, clinched a slot to the next round after toppling defending champion Petro Gazz, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18, on Tuesday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

The league powerhouse has never fallen out of the Final Four since its PVL debut in 2017, and that continued today after the triumph.

Import Erica Staunton took care of business after dropping 19 points on 16 attacks and three blocks, while Bernadeth Pons and Michele Gumabao were there to complete the supporting cast with 16 and 11, respectively. Playmaker Kyle Negrito enabled that offense with 16 excellent sets.

They entered the knockout match with a “do-or-do” mindset, said Pons, adding that they don’t want Staunton’s stint with them cut short.

“Sabi nga namin sa isa’t isa, it’s a do-or-do, so we’re not gonna die. So gusto rin naming talaga ma-extend ‘yung [conference] na ‘to for Erica [Staunton] rin kasi sobrang nag-e-enjoy din talaga siya dito sa volleyball sa Philippines and of course, hindi pa tapos ‘yung laban,” she said.

The 23-year-old affirmed that she wants to stay playing with them, and it would be “devastating” if they get eliminated in the quarters.

“I did not want to be done playing with this team, I love playing with these girls. I would’ve been devastated if today was my last day,” Staunton said.

The Gazz Angels, meanwhile, saw their hopes for a three-peat dashed after the three-set defeat.

All-Filipino Conference Most Valuable Player (MVP) Brooke Van Sickle and import Wilma Salas were there to pace the losing side’s offense with 18 points each, but there wasn’t much of help as captain Remy Palma was next at seven points.

Blocking Creamline’s way to the championship series are the Cignal HD Spikers, who were the second seed after the preliminaries.

The Cool Smashers will play coach Shaq delos Santos and company on Thursday, August 29, at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
