Warriors Consider Trade for Clint Capela to Bolster Front Court
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly setting their sights on Atlanta Hawks’ center Clint Capela in a bid to strengthen their front court ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season. With size being a critical need that remains unaddressed during this off-season, rumors suggest that Capela could be a key target for the Warriors as they look to reestablish themselves as serious contenders.

According to Bleacher Report’s Zack Buckley, the proposed trade would involve the Warriors sending Kevon Looney, Gary Payton II, Moses Moody, and a second-round draft pick to the Hawks in exchange for Capela. This potential move comes at a crucial time for the Warriors, who are searching for ways to fill the gap left by recent roster changes and to make a strong push in the upcoming season.
Capela, who played 73 games last season, is coming off a productive year where he averaged 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting an impressive 57.1% from the field. At 30 years old, the Swiss big man still represents a significant upgrade over the Warriors’ current front-line options, providing much-needed size, defensive prowess, and rebounding capabilities.
Fans will remember Capela from his time with the Houston Rockets, where he frequently faced off against the Warriors in the playoffs. After six years with the Rockets, Capela was traded to the Hawks in February 2020, where he quickly made an impact, leading the league in rebounding with 14.3 boards per game during his first full season in Atlanta.
Known for his effectiveness in pick-and-roll situations and his high field goal percentage, Capela is a reliable presence in the paint. He has averaged a double-double in seven consecutive seasons, showcasing his consistent ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. With career averages of 12.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, Capela could bring much-needed stability and strength to the Warriors’ lineup.
The Warriors have won four championships between 2015 and 2022, but recent signs suggest the sun may be setting on their dynasty. The loss of longtime sharpshooter Klay Thompson, who departed for the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, coupled with the decline of veteran Draymond Green, has left the Warriors looking for new ways to rebuild their competitive edge. While Stephen Curry remains an elite player, the team’s current roster is a far cry from its championship-winning years.
With the potential acquisition of Clint Capela, the Warriors hope to shore up their weaknesses and regain their footing as a formidable force in the Western Conference. Only time will tell if this rumored trade will come to fruition, but for now, it seems clear that Golden State is prepared to make bold moves to remain in the playoff picture.
