Ex-teammates Pons, Bell show out in first PVL meeting

Pons, Bell bring out the best from each other

Former teammates Bernadeth Pons and Khat Bell left it all on the court in their first meeting as opponents

FIVE years since they won the Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix for the Petron Blaze Spikers, Bernadeth Pons and Khat Bell now find themselves on opposite ends of the court.

Safe to say, they brought out the best from each other.

In their first Premier Volleyball League (PVL) clash since being teammates in 2019, Pons had the last laugh as her career-high 25 points powreed Creamline past Chery Tiggo in a four-setter on Tuesday.

It didn’t come easy for the Cool Smashers as Bell fired a game-high 31 points, but that’s why Pons made sure to elevate her game by dropping her PVL career high and go toe for toe with the brilliant import.

“Na-excite din talaga ako na makalaban siya kasi Khat Bell, alam ko kung pa’no siya maglaro, eh. Talagang totodo talaga siya. And nakita naman sa game ngayon na halos hingiin na niya rin ‘yung bola para lang maka-puntos din,” Pons said.

“Sobrang saya lang din kasi lahat ng inensayo namin talaga, na-apply namin ngayon sa game and teamwork talaga.”

‘She’s absolutely amazing’

Prior to their 2019 PSL title romp, Pons and Bell were both listed in Petron’s roster the year prior.

But the FEU star chose to represent the Blaze Spikers in beach volleyball while the latter was part of the indoor squad that won the 2018 PSL Grand Prix.

They played sparingly as teammates, as a result.

Now Bell couldn’t help but feel jealous towards Creamline import Erica Staunton who’ll be having the luxury of teaming up with Pons for a much longer stretch.

“I’m kind of jealous of Erica because I didn’t get the chance to play fully with Pons. I’m not sure if you guys know, but me and Pons played together during which she had a chance to choose between indoor and sand.

“She is obviously amazing in sand as well so she went to go play outdoors. So, I’m so jealous that Erica got the chance to play with her.”

While they aren’t teammates anymore, Bell still holds Pons in high regard

“Pons is absolutely amazing, she’s so crafty and she’s like an artist. There’s also some things that I picked up from Pons when I got the chance to play with her as well,” she said.

“She’s gonna be Pons, she’s gonna be what that is for sure.”
