Alyssa Valdez sees silver lining in defeat

Creamline, long-reigning champion of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), faced its first defeat in nearly eight months.

The setback, dealt by the formidable Chery Tiggo squad in a stunning straight-set victory, marked the end of Creamline’s remarkable 19-game winning streak, sending shockwaves through the league and sparking contemplation within the Cool Smashers’ camp.

Team captain Alyssa Valdez, a stalwart presence on the court, viewed the loss as a necessary jolt for her team’s pursuit of another title in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference.

Speaking candidly about the defeat, Valdez expressed a mix of disappointment and determination, recognizing the importance of experiencing adversity amidst their dominant run.

“It’s been a while, and perhaps it’s exactly what we needed,” remarked Valdez, reflecting on the defeat that halted their unbeaten streak. “This loss can serve as renewed energy and motivation for us. It’s one of those setbacks that can fuel our fire and push us to strive for more.”

Valdez acknowledged the elevated level of competition in the league since their last sweep loss in 2019, commending the impressive performance of their opponents, particularly the Chery Tiggo Crossovers.

Despite the defeat, she credited Chery Tiggo for their exceptional play and emphasized the need for Creamline to elevate their game even further in response.

“Hats off to them,” Valdez praised the opposing team. “But as Creamline, we can’t afford to settle. We need to step up our game and be even better in this conference.”

The loss, occurring midway through the elimination round, couldn’t have come at a better time, according to Valdez.

She sees it as an opportunity for the team to reassess their strategies, identify areas for improvement, and regroup for the challenges ahead.

“Having this loss now gives us a chance to reflect and make necessary adjustments,” explained Valdez.

“It’s a wake-up call for us to stay focused and not become complacent. There’s still a lot of volleyball to be played, and we’re determined to bounce back stronger.”

With their eyes set on capturing their sixth All-Filipino Conference title, Valdez and the Cool Smashers are ready to embrace the lessons learned from defeat and channel them into renewed vigor as they continue their quest for greatness in the PVL.
