Mika Reyes return boosts PLDT as ‘KKD’ remains day-to-day

EVEN with a few notable absences, PLDT is all set to go full throttle as new and returning faces bolster its Final Four bid in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference.

Mika Reyes is ‘100 percent ready’ to make her on-court comeback for the High Speed Hitters after her second shoulder surgery in a span of one year.

This, among other roster-related developments were confirmed by PLDT head coach Rald Ricafort to SPIN.ph on Wednesday afternoon.

While Reyes is raring to see action for the first time in 2024, her still-injured cohort Jovy Prado continues to recover exactly one year since tearing her ACL.

“Yes, Mika (Reyes) is 100% recovered. Si (Jovy) Prado 70-80 percent (recovered).”

Will KKD be playing soon?

Ex-F2 Logistics aces Majoy Baron and Kim Fajardo now have one full conference for PLDT to their names.

And soon enough, Kianna Dy’s turn to debut for the High Speed Hitters will come.

But how soon is soon enough?

Ricafort didn’t rule out Dy’s sought-after PLDT debut after injuring her knee in F2’s final PVL conference, though her status remains uncertain.

“Day-to-day pa Kianna (Dy) eh. If kaya mahabol (this conference), pwede naman. Pero so far, naka full-time pa siya sa rehab.”

Dimaculangan, Palomta out for now

While the return of Reyes will definitely be a big boost for the High Speed Hitters, they will have to make do with the absence of several key cogs to start the season.

Veteran playmaker Rhea Dimaculangan has taken a leave of absence from team duties as after getting married with beau Raymond Villarete last June, one that prompted PLDT’s selection of young Adamson setter Angge Alcantara in the inaugural PVL Rookie Draft.

And it was a pick PLDT knew they’ll make as Alcantara impressed them when the Lady Falcons trained with the High Speed Hitters two weeks prior to the draft combine.

But if PLDT reaches the Reinforced Conference semifinals, it will earn them a spot in the Invitational Conference this September and Dimaculangan might already be available by then.

“Naka-two weeks din (sina Angge Alcantara sa’min) before combine. Nakasabay siya sa training namin kasama ng ibang Adamson players na nagpa-draft. Pero setter position talaga priority namin dahil nga wala si Rhea (Dimaculangan),” he said.

“Earliest return ni Rhea (Dimaculangan) ay September.”

Alas Pilipinas-bound Dell Palomata will also miss the opening half of the Reinforced Conference but will return to PLDT after the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) and PVL’s August 11 window for national team players to return to their mother teams.

“Bonus na rin ‘yun (na babalik si Dell sa’min after August 11) since five sila lahat na middles. Pero for now, pinag-focus muna namin siya sa national team talaga.”

PLDT dialed in

With key reinforcements this conference in Alcantara and returning guest import Lena Samoilenko, Ricafort is confident that the High Speed Hitters can go all the way despite the absence of few key players.

And after just missing out of the Final Four by finishing fifth last conference, the PLDT shot-caller has full faith that his intact core will push them over the hump.

“Walang choice dahil kailangan talagang maging kumpyansa. Same core members naman kami and ang main addition lang ay si Lena (Samoilenko),” he said.

“But yes, alam naman ng players ang roles and importance ng players from bench na maka-contribute talaga ulit.”
