Chery Tiggo hopes Eya Laure’s status ‘could be resolved before new PVL season,’ says Velez

MANILA, Philippines – Team manager Aaron Velez said Monday that Eya Laure’s status with Chery Tiggo is still “under negotiation,” but they hope that the situation “could be resolved” before the new Premier Volleyball League (PVL) season starts.

Velez described Laure’s split from their team as somewhat “unfortunate,” though he remains hopeful of a resolution.

“I can’t really say na mutual kasi sa any break-up naman, talagang meron ‘yan mga masalimuot na pinagdadaanan. Pero hopefully ma-resolve siya nang maayos,” Velez told reporters at the sidelines of the press conference for the 2024-25 All-Filipino Conference.

“Status lang namin ngayon kay Eya Laure–it’s still under negotiation. Hopefully we could actually resolve this amicably. Of course we look after also yung welfare ni Eya and hopefully ma-resolve nga ito ng meet halfway for both parties,” he also said.

“Definitely before the PVL starts we want to resolve this.”

Velez declined to elaborate the clause in question due to a non-disclosure agreement, but he assured Laure was made aware of the provision in her deal with the team.

“As mentioned nga, because of the non-disclosure of any contract, I can’t really say the entire clause, rest assured it was also read before and it was also discussed,” he said.

Chery Tiggo remains in contact with Laure, bared Velez: “Merong [communication], hindi naman siya nawala. Actively naman napag-uusapan.”

Laure last saw action in the PVL during the 2024 All-Filipino Conference. She was not able to play for the Crossovers in the 2024 Reinforced Conference due to her responsibilities with Alas Pilipinas Women.

The 25-year-old product of University of Santo Tomas (UST) reportedly wanted out of Chery Tiggo.

Meanwhile, the PVL said it does not have regulations on non-compete clauses, but it’s something the league “will look into,” said commissioner Sherwin Malonzo.

“At this point, we don’t have any regulations against that. It is a contract between Chery Tiggo and Eya that we’re not privy to. Ano yun, di muna namin ginagalaw yun sa ngayon. Moving forward, we will look into it. It might affect the regulations we’re developing, or ano lang, talagang at the end of the day, it’s between the player and the team lang ang usapan ng kontrata.”
