Bernadeth Pons ready for showdown against former coach Shaq Delos Santos

As Creamline’s knockout semifinal clash with Cignal approaches in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, all eyes will be on Bernadeth Pons, who faces a unique challenge: going up against her former college coach, Shaq delos Santos.

With the Cool Smashers grappling with injuries to key players Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos, and Jema Galanza, Pons has emerged as a linchpin for the team.

Alongside veteran spiker Michele Gumabao, Pons has been a beacon of consistency, stepping up to fill the void left by the absent stars.

Despite delos Santos’ intimate knowledge of her game from their time together at Far Eastern University, Pons is confident she has evolved beyond the player he once coached.

“Syempre excited ako na makalaban din sila. Alam ko na kilala ako ni coach [Shaq] kung paano ako maglaro, pero syempre mas marami na akong baon ngayon,” Pons shared.

Even though they now represent opposing teams, the bond between Pons and delos Santos remains strong. The communication between them hasn’t waned, and delos Santos continues to be a source of support in Pons’ career.

“Syempre ano, si Coach Shaq naman hindi naman napuputol ‘yung communication namin, minsan naman naguusap pa rin kami,” Pons noted. “Proud siya sa nagiging performance ko ngayon, so syempre isa rin ‘yun sa motivation ko para mas mag-perform pa lalo, lalo na sila ‘yung makakaharap namin.”

Pons’ recent performances underscore her readiness for this high-stakes match.

In a decisive victory over the reigning two-time champions Petro Gazz, she was instrumental. Teaming up with Staunton, Pons led Creamline to a straight-set triumph, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18. Her contributions were stellar: 16 points, with 15 coming from attacks, and 12 excellent receptions, all within a swift one hour and 33 minutes.

As the Cool Smashers prepare to face Cignal on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City, Pons emphasizes the importance of maintaining a ‘do-or-die’ mentality.

“Actually, ‘yung mindset pa rin is it’s a do-or-die game para hindi namin makalimutan na laglagan ‘yung game. Do-or-do kasi ayaw talaga naming magpatalo, gusto talaga namin na makuha ‘yung game na ‘to,” she stated.

“Coming into this game talaga, lahat kami gusto namin na makuha ‘tong game na ‘to para ma-extend namin hanggang finals, so we’ll take it one game at a time.”
