Creamline seals No. 1 seed in Pool A

MANILA, Philippines — Creamline secured the top seed of Pool A after thrashing Nxled, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) 2024 Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Thursday, August 8.

After losing a five-set thriller against PLDT on opening day, the Cool Smashers bounced back by winning their next four games, including Thursday’s masterful victory against the Chameleons to claim the top spot in Group A.

“We are happy because we are going to enter the second round carrying a good (4-1) record. We are thankful for this victory and we will be ready for the next round,” Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses said after the game.

Bernadeth Pons made a double-double performance of 13 points and 14 excellent digs to lead the Cool Smashers as team captain Michelle Gumabao chipped in 12 points.

“Every game is important and our coaches remind us to not dwell on our mistakes. Despite the challenges that we face as a team we were able to rise above it,” Gumabao said.

The Cool Smashers outplayed the Chameleons in the first two sets but Nxled displayed grit in the third set as it took an 11-5 lead.

Creamline, however, retaliated with a 4-0 run to make it 9-11.

Nxled import Meegan Hart slammed a quick one and Chiara Permentilla scored on a crosscourt kill to stretch their lead to 13-9.

Creamline rallied anew and tied the set at 16-all before finishing the set at 25-20.

No Chameleons scored in double digits as Maraguinot led the scoring with nine points, while Hart added seven.

Nxled will be seeded along with the top three teams of Pool B (Akari, Cignal, Capital 1) while Creamline holds the advantage against the bottom teams of Pool B (Choco Mucho, Petro Gazz, ZUS).
