SANTA ROSA, Laguna – Creamline captain Alyssa Valdez expects her team to bounce back from a shock straight sets loss dealt by the Chery Tiggo Crossovers in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference on Saturday at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex.

The Cool Smashers’ defeat was historic in itself — it was their first defeat in 20 games, coming from a 15-game sweep of the 2023 Second All-Filipino Conference, and were still spotless after four games this tourney.

Up until today.

It was also their first straight-set downfall since May 26, 2019, from the Petro Gazz Angels in the Reinforced Conference.

Though visibly stunned, Valdez still took time to entertain an interview with reporters to reflect on her team’s situation after a 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 loss against Chery Tiggo.

The 30-year-old beloved volleyball player said Creamline will make this affair a springboard and motivate them to feel the fire again.

“So siguro, my reaction to that after five years — wow, it’s been a while. And probably it’s really about time also for us to feel that way again. So that may renewed energy and strength kaming pagkukuhanan ng motivation,” Valdez told reporters after the match.

(So maybe, my reaction to that after years is, wow, it’s been a while. And probably it’s really about time also for us to feel that way again. So that we’ll have renewed energy and strength and a source of motivation.)

Valdez gave credit to the teams and said the level of competition in the PVL is ascending.

“Well, what I can say siguro the quality of games now it’s really entertaining, interesting. Everyone’s really keeping up and ganda talaga ng nilalaro ng bawat teams.”

(Well, what I can say maybe is the quality of games now, it’s really entertaining and interesting. Everyone’s really keeping up and every team is giving a good fight.)

The Creamline skipper also shared what happened in the locker room after the match.

She said the team was quiet, but asserted that they are focused on improving and bouncing back for the next game.

“Well it’s a very quiet dugout, definitely. That’s expected. But you know, knowing my teammates, it might be quiet, but in their heads they’re all like really thinking on what to do, on how to improve, on how to make bawi or be better the next game. [H]opefully (‘yung competitiveness) mabalik at mas madagdagan pa ‘yung fire namin to fight this conference.”

Valdez said the loss may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the team.

“I think maganda din ‘to at least kahit papa’no early at in the season and I would say dami din naming natutunan kahit gano’n so we’re really gonna go back and practice. I guess ‘yon na ‘yung magagawa namin, we have to focus on what to improve and going back to the conference.”

(I think this is fine, at least we lost early in the conference, and I would say we learned a lot even though that happened. So we’re gonna go back and practice. I guess that’s what we’re gonna do, we have to focus on what to improve and going back to the conference.)

“We’re gonna work harder. So we’re gonna be more focused definitely. And let’s see. We’re gonna give a good fight every game.”
