The Creamline Cool Smashers always tend to rack up the errors. Game 1 of the PVL Second All-Filipino Conference finals on Thursday was no different, as they committed a whopping 27 blunders against sister team Choco Mucho Flying Titans.

That’s enough to win a set and more.

But as the Cool Smashers’ 14-0 record in the conference shows, they have more than enough to make up for their mistakes. The defending champions picked up the first victory in the best-of-three series, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22.

Team captain Alyssa Valdez, who fired three straight points to help snatch Set 3, shared what makes Creamline cool, calm, and collected under pressure, even without former star setter Jia de Guzman and former middle blocker Ced Domingo.

“Grabe ‘yung growth and maturity ng lahat. Ang dami rin naming pinagdaanan this conference,” she told reporters after the game.

“Kung sino ipapasok ni coach (Sherwin Meneses), talagang may identity na. Kilala na nila sarili nila on how they play and how we play as a team,” she reflected. “I think the very crucial part is we have to stick to the system talaga.”

She racked up 11 points, including an ace, along with 11 excellent digs and eight excellent receptions.

Three-time PVL MVP Tots Carlos had to agree.

“One thing na maganda sa Creamline, ‘di na kami kailangan i-remind ni coach na mindset ganito, mindset ganyan. Personally, very competitive ang mga tao,” Carlos explained.

“Very into the system kami. So kunwari, ako, may sarili akong mindset, may sarili silang mindset. Pero dun pa rin nagfo-fall sa team goal. So ‘yun ‘yung maganda sa team, ‘di na kailangan sabihin ni coach ‘yung mga mental stuff. More on ano gagawin sa court. ‘Yun ‘yung mahalaga, mag-respond kami sa pinapagawa niya.”

And respond she did. Carlos, who was used as a super sub in most of Creamline’s matches this conference, returned to the starting unit for the semifinals and the finals.

She fired 16 attack points in Game 1.
