Alyssa Valdez wants to make impactful comeback before retiring

Alyssa Valdez acknowledges her approaching retirement, but before it comes, she is determined to achieve one goal: to return to the court stronger than ever.

In 2022, the 31-year-old volleyball icon stepped back from her duties due to a right knee injury. While she made a few appearances last year, she had to sit out again due to ongoing injury concerns.

Although the timing of her official comeback remains uncertain, Alyssa plans to make the most of her remaining years in professional volleyball, especially as age becomes a factor in her decision to retire.

“Right now, one thing I’ve realized after my injuries is that I think I just want to get back feeling na I enjoy playing this sport. I want to get back 100 percent. Contribute in any way I can to the team. ‘Yun lang ‘yung goals ko right now,” she told Bilyonaryo News Channel’s “The Scorecard.”

With her years of experience, Alyssa remains humble, recognizing that there is still much for her to learn. She mentioned that if her retirement is five to six years away, similar to Pleumjit Thinkaow of Thailand, who retired at 37, she simply wants to feel the excitement of the game again, just like she did as a student-athlete.

“It’s been so different now. I mean, from high school to college, volleyball for me is my outlet. When you turn pro kasi, there are different responsibilities na kasama.”

“I want to get back that feeling na nag-eenjoy ulit ako sa paglalaro,” she added.

Retirement is certainly not a distant thought for Alyssa, but like any athlete, she aims to finish her final chapter strong and healthy.
