MANILA (UPDATED) – Creamline made sure that there would be no repeat of their Chery Tiggo loss from last conference’s elimination round.
The Cool Smashers fended off the Crossovers, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19, for their second victory in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City
Both teams are missing crucial players — Creamline is playing this tourney without star players Tots Carlos, Alyssa Valdez, and Alas Pilipinas’ Jema Galanza, while Chery Tiggo is without national team standouts Eya Laure and Jen Nierva, including EJ Laure.
Outside hitter and Player of the Game Bernadeth Pons took charge in the attacking department, listing 25 of Creamline’s 77 total hits compared to coach Kungfu Reyes squad’s 61 in total.
Pons said her motivation coming into this match was her lackluster nine-point performance against Farm Fresh.
“Personally, ‘yung last game [‘yung motivation] ko. Kasi medyo disappointed ako sa sarili ko, sa performance ko kasi alam ko na mas may ibibigay pa ‘ko, mas kaya ko pang mag-contribute sa team. So ‘yun din talaga ‘yung isa sa motivation ko coming into this game,” Pons told reporters during the postgame interview.
Three more Creamline players were in double-digit scoring, led by import Erica Staunton who had 21 points, Michele Gumabao who chipped in 17, and Bea de Leon who gave 12 markers.
Chery Tiggo reinforcement Khat Bell paced the defeated side with a game-high 31 points.
The Crossovers would overcome a 23-24 hole in Set 2, as Bell, Mary Rhose Dapol, and a fired up Aby Marano clinched clutch hits to tie at one-set apiece.
However, the Sherwin Meneses-mentored squad quickly regained the set lead as his wards orchestrated a 7-0 run from a 7-all deadlock to pull away in the third chapter.
An 11-3 start in the final canto would enable the Cool Smashers to conclude the two-hour, 15-minute encounter in front of 1,820 volleyball fans.
Meneses was happy that they are now gaining thrust in the import-laced tilt.
“Sobrang happy kasi ‘yung preparation namin, nakita namin sa game and siyempre ‘yung momentum napupunta sa Creamline, naka-two straight [wins] kami. sana magsunod-sunod ‘yung panalo namin para maging maganda ‘yung standing namin pagdating [next round] sa kabilang bracket,” Meneses said.
Pons and company could register their third victory against Galeries on Saturday, while Chery Tiggo could bounce back against PLDT at the same game date.
