Jema Galanza on Grand Slam point: ‘Ako na ‘to, tatapusin ko na ‘to para sa kanila’

MANILA – Behind Jema Galanza’s heroics in the clutch, the Creamline Cool Smashers secured the first Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Grand Slam on Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Galanza wore the heroic cape twice in their championship showdown against Cignal.

First, when Creamline was down two sets to one, it was Galanza who blocked Toni Basas in Set 4 and forced a winner-take-all decider; second, it was she who nailed the last two points for the Cool Smashers, including the Grand Slam point.

But during those moments, she had to power through her nerves as she only reunited with the Cool Smashers a day before the final as she first had to attend to her responsibilities with the Alas Pilipinas national team.

Nonetheless, it was an experience the former Adamson University standout made sure to never forget.

The Cool Smashers defeated Cignal HD in a five-set thriller, 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 15-13.

“Actually, kinakabahan po ako kasi kaunti lang ‘yung preparation namin. Halos ‘di talaga ako naka-training kasama sila. So ‘yun nga, may kaba pero sabi ko sa isip ko: ako na ‘to, tatapusin ko na ‘to para sa kanila,” Galanza said during the postgame interview.

“‘Pag iniisip ko kasi ‘yung mga ganu’ng games, ‘yun nga, ang sarap sa feeling kasi ang sarap ‘yung mga pressure na mga games. Talagang gina-grab ko lang din kasi doon ka din matututo. Medyo may kaba lang pero lagi lang sila [teammates] ‘yung iniisip ko,” she added.

Her late entry to the conference turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the Cool Smashers needed some fresh legs after playing two finals matches in a two-week span.

“Siyempre, happy. Super happy talaga. Actually, ayoko na nga maglaro kasi ang ganda-ganda naman ng nilalaro nila. Pero siyempre ang haba na ng nilaro nila this season, dalawang conference na magkasunod so kailangan din talaga ng tulong. Hindi man sa points, kumbaga sa pagiging vocal ba sa mga teammates ko,” she said.

Galanza said she was proud to see her team persevere without key players in Tots Carlos and Alyssa Valdez.

“Sana may naitulong, pero ‘yun, super happy talaga. Nakaka-proud ang lahat kasi hindi madali yung trabahong ginawa nila. Nawala si Ate Ly [Alyssa Valdez] si Tots [Carlos], nawala din ako ng mga ilang weeks. Mahirap ‘yung mga trabahong ginawa nila, dinala nila kami dito,” she said.
