LeBron James, like Jordan, has one of the greatest resumes in NBA history and the two are widely considered the two best players in league history.
When it comes to Chicago natives, few consider the debate a serious one. For most Bulls fans, there is no debate, Jordan is the GOAT and no one can top his two three-peats with the Bulls.
WWE superstar CM Punk fits that mold as the Chicago native dubbed the NBA’s GOAT debate a “no contest” when appearing on ESPN’s First Take.
“No contest, come on. [It’s Jordan] 100 percent. I think the NBA is played and especially officiated a lot differently in 2024 than it was in the ’90s when the Bulls had the dynasty. I think M.J. is up there with [Wayne] Gretzky as like ‘the guy’ when you mention a sport. When you mention basketball you mention Michael Jordan. I would say Kobe [Bryant] is a closer comparison to Michael Jordan than LeBron,” CM Punk stated on the show.
LeBron James still has the opportunity to win another championship, his fifth, but it’s unlikely he’ll catch Jordan at six before he retires. Despite this, LeBron James may not have to.
The 39-year old has withstood the test of time better than any player in NBA history, averaging a mind-boggling 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds in his 21st season in the NBA.
LeBron James bolstering GOAT case with Olympic performance
Possibly the greatest testament to LeBron James’ incredible longevity is his performance thus far in the Olympics for Team USA.
Looking for his third gold medal, LeBron James led Team USA to a win in their Olympic opener versus Serbia. He posted 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, leading the team in both assists and rebounds.
James’ 21 points were second only to Kevin Durant, who finished with 23 points for the game.
Even in the Olympics and even at 39 years old, LeBron James is leading a group of the best basketball players in the world. The 20-time NBA All-Star continues to take over in clutch situations in the Olympics.
James also led Team USA to an undefeated record in their exhibition matchups, leading the team in points and assists with 14.6 points, 3.8 assists and 4.0 rebounds in their five victories.
