The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings want to shake up their team once again after bowing out in the quarterfinals of the 2014 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

San Mig Super Coffee head coach Tim Cone, right after their Game 3 victory over the Alaska Aces in the quarterfinals, confirmed that Cariaso is indeed on the short list of choices as Ginebra’s next head coach.

Cariaso, who is currently serving as the main assistant of Cone with the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers, could be named as Ginebra’s new head coach in the upcoming Governors Cup according but Cone said there is nothing definite yet.

“I don’t know if the organization has come out with a statement, but I think it’s gonna happen,” said Cone. The San Miguel Corporation is known to move their coaches around when they feel like it. Just this conference, Biboy Ravanes was named San Miguel Beer’s head coach and Gee Abanilla was named team manager and then PBA Governor.

Last season, they also moved Olsen Racela out of his head coach position with the Petron Blaze Boosters made him one of Cone’s assistants.

Drafted sixth overall by the Alaska Aces in the 1995 PBA Draft, Cariaso played for 15 years under four teams. After Alaska, he suited up for Mobiline, Tanduay, and Coca-Cola. He flew back to the United States but returned to the Philippines to act as Cone’s first assistant.

Cariaso won the Rookie of the Year honors in 1995. He was a ten-time PBA All-Star and a member of many PBA Mythical Fives and All Defensive squads. He is known to be a bridge between Fil-Ams and homegrown talents throughout his career. Cone even went as far as calling him the glue guy for the Mixers.

After finishing at the top spot after the eliminations of the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup, Ginebra retained Ato Agustin as head coach on paper but gave the coaching duties to assistant coach Juno Sauler.

It didn’t work out that well as the Kings limped to the quarterfinals as the eighth-seeded team in the 2014 PBA Commissioner’s Cup where they were eliminated by the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in one game. Ginebra would lose Sauler to the DLSU Green Archers in their UAAP title-retention bid but instead of giving the power back to Agustin, it is clear that Ginebra wants another fresh start.
