PVL: Remy Palma knows what it takes to topple Creamline — ‘Kailangan ‘yung pinaka-the best mong game’
SANTA ROSA, Laguna – After PetroGazz claimed only their sixth win against Creamline in 29 tries, team captain Remy Palma revealed what it takes to snatch a win against the winningest Premier Volleyball League club.
“Ako, for the past four years, every time na kalaban ko sila, iba dapat ‘yung mindset mo,” said Palma after their 15-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 15-13 triumph over the Cool Smashers in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex on Saturday.
It was also just their second win in recent 19 games versus the “deep” Cool Smashers.
“Kung nagma-mindset ka na ‘ito ‘yung gagawin mo,’ sa kanila kasi kailangan ‘yung pinaka-the best mong game, ‘yun ‘yung gagawin mo kasi lahat sila kailangan mong bantayan, lahat sila pwedeng maka-score,” she continued.
It seemed to be an away game for the Gazz Angels as the Santa Rosa crowd — with more than 6,000 spectators — was dominated by Creamline faithful wearing pink shirts in support of Alyssa Valdez and company.
But Palma took care of things on the emotional side and reminded the Gazz Angels to stay focused amid pressure and noise from the Creamline fans.
“[W]e know naman Creamline, they have a big fanbase. Also out-of-town game pa tayo so lahat talaga ng tao mag-e-expect and also aabangan talaga ‘yung game namin,” the middle blocker said.
“Lagi ko naman din silang nire-remind na nasa sa ‘tin naman kung magpapaapekto tayo sa crowd, kung mape-pressure tayo. Pressure is normal pero ang tanong dun is kung paano mo siya i-hahandle. Ang daming times na hindi na kami magkarinigan but we choose to stay focused, we choose to stay at the present time kung ano ‘yung nangyayari sa loob,” the volleyball standout from Iloilo said further.
Palma’s efforts in leadership didn’t go unnoticed as mentor Koji Tsuzurabara praised the skipper’s composure in the tight game.
“Thank you so much to Captain Rem for always controlling the emotions of other players. She made sure Petro Gazz would have good teamwork. In this five-set win, she always provided good leadership. She was our hero,” the Japanese tactician said.
After getting the better of the five-set marathon, Palma admitted that “it feels good” to win against the defending champions.
“Every win po namin sa kanila is masarap sa pakiramdam. Malaking experience, magandang experience. Lagi naming babaunin lahat.”
Creamline has not found luck at the same Laguna venue as they suffered consecutive defeats in Santa Rosa, the first being dealt by Chery Tiggo.
Both Creamline and Petro Gazz are seeking to upscale their semis hunt and are currently at 6-2.
