Always learning: Jema Galanza gets somber lessons in family vacation in Vietnam
PVL

After helping the Creamline Cool Smashers win another title, Jema Galanza is making the most of the holidays to relax with her family in Vietnam before the next PVL season starts.

It seems the PVL Second All-Filipino Conference Best Outside Spiker enjoyed the misty weather while trekking in Sa Pa in northwestern Vietnam.

Galanza and her family also got to experience the beautiful water and the interesting caves in the world-famous Ha Long Bay.

Another part of their trip wasn’t quite fun though, as they visited the Hoa Lo Prison.

It was originally used by French colonialists for political prisoners. Later, it was utilized by North Vietnam to detain American pilots shot down during the Vietnam War.

One of the notable prisoners there was eventual US senator and presidential nominee John McCain.

It’s a somber reminder of how bleak it was at the time, especially when there’s a guillotine right inside the facility.

Galanza’s visit to the prison was surely enlightening for her, having learned more about a different part of the world. As they say, the learning never stops, even when she’s outside the volleyball court.

Always good to get history lessons when you’re out and about. It’s an educational respite from all the rigors and pressures of competing.

Maybe she can tell Ella de Jesus all about it when she returns home to the Philippines.
