Alyssa Valdez acknowledges areas for improvement for Creamline

Creamline emerged victorious once again, inching closer to a coveted spot in the semifinals of the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference. Their eighth win came at the expense of the spirited NXLED team, although the journey was not without its nail-biting moments.

In a display of dominance, the Cool Smashers secured a straight-set victory with scores of 25-23, 25-16, and 25-21 on Thursday. However, the road to triumph was paved with challenges, particularly in the initial set where the defending champions found themselves trailing 16-21. Demonstrating resilience, Creamline rallied back to clinch the set 25-23.

Despite maintaining their unbeaten status and securing the top spot in the 12-team standings, team captain Alyssa Valdez acknowledged that there are areas that require attention and improvement.

“We’re very happy and grateful for the win because all the teams are aiming for that spot in the semifinals. A win is a win for us today,” said Valdez, who contributed seven crucial points in two sets.

“But there were also lapses, and we have to work harder in our training in the next few days,” she added.

Jema Galanza, delivering a stellar all-around performance with 14 points, nine excellent receptions, and eight digs, commended the team’s determination against the inspired NXLED squad.

Despite facing a challenging third set, the Cool Smashers navigated through NXLED’s resistance, sealing the victory in 85 minutes with well-timed hits from Michele Gumabao, Tots Carlos, and Galanza’s back-to-back aces.

“Despite our shortcomings, you can really see how solid the team is. We really persevered, especially in the first set when they had a significant lead, but that’s where we were tested,” said the 5-foot-7 open hitter out of Adamson University.

Looking ahead, Creamline refuses to let complacency seep in as they gear up for a showdown against the formidable Chery Tiggo squad, known for defeating top teams like Cignal, Petro Gazz, and PLDT.

“No room for relaxation. We will focus on training, address the shortcomings from this game, and correct them in the next because they’re not an easy opponent,” emphasized Galanza.

“Tuesday’s game will be interesting, but we’re going to go back, do our job, work again, and really study them, including the strategies that our coach will implement,” added Valdez. The upcoming clash promises to be a thrilling encounter, and the Cool Smashers are prepared to put in the hard work needed to secure another triumph.
