Team USA has gone unbeaten with a 5-0 record in the exhibition matches leading to the Olympics 2024. In addition to that, they defeated Serbia 110-84 at the Olympic Group C Opener. A large part of the credit for Team USA’s success goes to the coaching staff, who were guiding their players to victory. And coaching such an illustrious team to represent the nation is no joke. Probably why, the United States decided to send the crème de la crème to the Paris Olympics. Here’s a short rundown of everyone on the coaching staff for the basketball team at the Olympics this year.
Team USA basketball coaching staff at Paris Olympics 2024
Steve Kerr
While the current US team vastly differs from its 2023 basketball World Cup roster, its head coach remains the same. The name Steve Kerr is not new for basketball fans. From his time as a player for Chicago Bulls back in the 90s to the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Kerr has been bagging championships.
Moreover, he has collected several major accolades in his coaching career. He was the NBA coach of the year in 2016 and was included in one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history as part of the league’s 75th anniversary celebration in 2022. All these accolades make him more than qualified to lead Team USA to gold in this Olympics.
And for those of you who didn’t know, this is Kerr’s first Olympics as the Head coach. Earlier, he was an assistant coach for the Gold medalists under Gregg Popovich at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Erik Spoelstra
It is no surprise that Erik Spoelstra is one of the assistant coaches who will be helping Team USA to secure the Olympic gold medal. Currently, he is the head coach of the Miami Heat and has helped them win two back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013, ranking him the eighth coach to win the championship consecutively in two years.
In 2022, like Steve Kerr, the name Erik Spoelstra was included in the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history. In 2017, he shared the Michael H. Goldberg Coach of the Year Award with Mike D’Antoni. He has several records in his name besides this, which makes him more than fitting to be one of Team USA’s assistant coaches.
Tyronn Lue
Another name in Team USA’s assistant coaches is none other than Tyronn Lue. He is currently the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Before he was leading the Clippers, he was the Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach, leading them to a 2016 NBA championship.
Tyronn Lue also had secured several accolades in his run as a coach. He secured not one, not two, but three Coach of the Month awards since 2016. In 2024, he was awarded Western Conference Coach of the Month twice in consecutive months, making him the first coach in the Clipper’s franchise history to win it back-to-back in two months.
Mark Few
Last but not least, Mark Few is also an assistant coach for Team USA. Though he has not coached an NBA team, Mark’s coaching prowess is widely known in the NCAA divisions. Like the other coaches, Mark Few has several accolades as a coach as well.
He led Gonzaga to two NCAA national championship appearances, five elite eight appearances, and 13 Sweet 16 appearances. He also led the US Pan American Men’s basketball team to win the bronze medal in 2015.
Overall, coaching the basketball team at the Olympics is rather a pretty high-profile responsibility. Not only does it give these coaches a chance to lead the best players in the country, but also represents the country at such a coveted platform. It’s a symbol of pride and honor. Every 4 years, celebrated coaches walk the Olympics hardwood floor, with only one goal in mind: The Gold medal.
