A LeBron James-Steph Curry NBA alliance gets cold water poured over it

Warriors' Stephen Curry and Lakers' LeBron James with question mark in between them

The 2024 Paris Olympics did not just mark the end of an era for Team USA men’s basketball. It also provided many fans with the opportunity to realize one of their hoops fantasies– seeing LeBron James and Stephen Curry play in a legitimate competition together as teammates.

Some believe the dynamic duo’s triumphant display on the world stage is but an appetizer for what can come in the NBA. Though, it might be more prudent to view this mash-up of icons as a special and once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

Visions of James and Curry both wearing Lakers or Warriors uniforms might be evaporating into thin air after the latest bit of insight.

“Did (unnamed TV analyst) really say something about LeBron and Steph teaming up someday?” an NBA source rhetorically asked Sam Amico of Hoopswire.com. “That will never happen. In fact, they will never be on the same team again. Cool Olympic run for sure. But those two as teammates is over for all eternity.”

LeBron James and Stephen Curry have an amazing two weeks in Paris

United States guard LeBron James (6) and shooting guard Stephen Curry (4) celebrate after the game against Serbia in a men's basketball semifinal game during the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games at Accor Arena.
The NBA’s all-time scoring champion and the greatest shooter the league has ever known led their country to a hard-fought Olympics gold medal, with each future Hall of Famer stepping up at different moments to ensure that Team USA officially remains the preeminent basketball power for at least another four years. James served as the group’s anchor while Curry exploded in the final two games.

Debates have raged on regarding the tournament MVP award, but both men were needed to secure victory for “The Avengers.” The image of them celebrating in uproarious excitement following their epic comeback win over Serbia in the semifinals is bound to pull at the heartstrings of Lakers and Warriors fans. Though, there is currently no feasible path that leads with them representing the same NBA franchise.

LeBron James appears to be ensconced in Purple and Gold, especially now that his son is on the team. Stephen Curry is synonymous with Golden State and is a San Francisco Bay institution at this point. Losing can always change circumstances, and both of these squads did compete in the Play-in Tournament last season, but it is still difficult to envision an opportunity that would bring these two together once again.

While sharing the court in an NBA All-Star Game is obviously not the same as going for gold in the Olympics, it might have to do. Instead of lamenting what could have been or what should be, it might be healthier to just appreciate this legendary Team USA union.
